Cyprus rent a car - is it worth it?

I'm going to Cyprus for a couple of weeks and want to drive around the island on my own to see the beaches and small towns. I've never rented a car there before and don't know how convenient and safe it is to drive. Has anyone used Cyprus rent a car? Is it worth renting a car, or is it easier to take a taxi?
